Gastroenterologist

Ian Norton received a MBBS with Honours from the University of Sydney (USyd) in 1987. He subsequently specialised in Gastroenterology and received his FRACP in 1993. He was an NH&MRC Research Fellow with the University of NSW and received a PhD for work in pancreatic cell biology in 1997. Subsequently, he completed Fellowships in Advanced Endoscopy and Pancreatology at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and was on staff there as an Assistant Professor and Consultant Physician until 2001. Since then he has practiced in Sydney, and for the last 15yrs as a Senior Staff Specialist at RNSH. He recently completed a Masters degree in Bioethics at the University of Sydney.

He has over 50 published papers in peer reviewed journals and over 100 scientific presentations to national and international meetings. He has presented many state-of-the-art lectures as well as multiple review articles, book chapters and is co-editor of the major text on endoscopic practice. He has been a reviewer for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and since 2010 has been a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is past President of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and was instigator of the colonoscopy recertification program which is now mandatory for all colonoscopists in Australia. He has been involved in many committees to State and Federal governments. He is currently the Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at RNSH and Associate Professor at the University of Sydney. He co-chairs the Serious Incident Review Committee at RNSH and is head of the Gastroenterology Network for Northern Sydney LHD. He is a Learning Advisor for USyd and lectures in biliary physiology and bioethics to USyd medical students.

His current interests are complex endoscopy (including EUS, ERCP and complex polypectomy), colonoscopy quality and medical ethics.
